Having a midwife means having the birth you want, where you want and with whom you want. But how easy is it to gain access to midwifery care? If you’ve ever tried to get a midwife, you may have filled out a form and you may have been put on a waiting list. You may still be waiting. If you want to increase your chances on getting this type of continuity of care, here are a few tips.
As soon as you pee on a stick and see that PLUS SIGN symbol, you can request a midwife. Don’t wait until a doctor confirms it. There is a funny saying that women announce their pregnancy to the midwife before their husband. This will give you a good chance of getting a midwife even if you are very early and it will set you up in a good position for future pregnancies.
Fill out all the forms
Start with the main form on the Alberta Association of Midwives website
Then go to every Midwifery Care provider in your area and fill out every form. The more waiting lists you are on, the better chance you have of being chosen.
If you want a home-birth or a hospital birth or you want the birth centre, say so. If you know you will want an epidural, say so. Be honest and authentic and let your personality shine through. You are more likely to connect with a midwife who shares the same values as you, so let them know who you are and what your honest ideal birth looks like.
Share share share
Share everything you can about why you want a midwife. If you know someone who had a midwife, share that. If you have a doula, share that. Share what about midwifery care drew you to request one. Share as much as you can about yourself and be open. You will have a good chance of someone being drawn to working with your family if you share share share.
Good luck on your journey to your beautiful birth 🙂
